Quilt #23: 2wenty Thre3 Happy Stars

Quilt 23 is probably one of my favorites – I had a really hard time giving it away; but, give it away I did: to my very good friend who turned 23 this year. Which means quilt #23 was a 23-rd birthday gift, sewn out of the fabric line 2wentyThre3 by Julie Comstock for Moda Fabrics.

I’d been hoarding a layer cake of the fabric for over a year when I stumbled upon Material Girl Quilts’ Layer Cake Sampler Quilt A-long. I had planned to follow the quilt-along all the way through with this layer cake, but the more I looked at the blocks, the more I was drawn to the “Happy Stars” block – and the more I wanted to make an entire quilt using just the “Happy Stars” block. Quilt2wentyThre3_5

So, that’s what I did. I took 12 of the completed Happy Stars blocks, just over 1/2 of the finished blocks, and made a beautiful, country-chic quilt. Quilt2wentyThre3_6

I bound the finished quilt with three colors of bias tape – all corresponding to colors in the fabric. For quilting, I just followed the various rows of half-square-triangles and stitched in the ditch. I didn’t want anything to distract from the fun block pattern. Quilt2wentyThre3_1

And, as is habit, I backed the quilt with a vintage sheet. Lots of pink in this one, more than I would normally include, but it fits the pattern well. Quilt2wentyThre3_4

I totally love this one. Plus, the layer cake pattern made so many blocks that I’ve got enough to make my own 9-patch to keep. Quilt2wentyThre3_2

And that, my friends, is 23 quilts blogged and only 3 more to go!
