How Often is Too Often?

Let me start off by shamefully admitting that up until this past September, I was a full-fledged member of the Lame Spnosors Club. I rarely wrote my two sponsored children, even though I had just added Emily in February. I would only write when they wrote to me – roughly 3 times a year. To give you an idea, before September, I had written Helen a total of 1 time this year – back in March. I did write Emily a short email letter after I sponsored her, but again, that was in March.

Fast forward to September and God really took a hold of my heart. I sent out a longer-than-usual letter Helen Angela for her birthday, and, in the process, stumbled upon the compassion blog and OurCompassion (OC). It was also during this time that I found some truly inspiring blogs about writing to sponsored children (Thanks to Michelle, Jessica, and Lisa-Jo for lighting my coals and providing tons of inspiration!) I knew that my occasional writing wasn’t going to cut it. So, I stepped it up. I started writing more often, and I requested to become a correspondent sponsor, hoping to send letters to a child that would otherwise get none.

Ok, this is probably the part where you’re going to think I’m a crazy cat-lady with too much time on her hands, but stick with me…even though I do have a crazy cat, but that’s another story…

I know that it is somewhat normal for those of us in the thralls of letter writing to aspire to write our kids at least once a month- but I’m telling you, I was/am on fire!  I blew way past once a month and what started out as averaging once a week to each child quickly became 2-3 times a week. In the past 2 months, I’ve written Helen a total of 12 times and Emily 10 (I just got Josue this week, but I’ve written him 4 times!) So, at what point am I writing too often? I know that the letters encourage the kids and build bonds, but I don’t want to overwhelm them. It’s just, I really LIKE sending the letters. I enjoy writing them, and LOVE LOVE LOVE the new online tool (which, by the way, keeps the letters pretty short). It’s fun for me to go to the store and pick out cute stickers or coloring pages to send to my girls and sports cards to send to Josue. Yet, after reading some posts at OC and elsewhere, it’s been weighing on my mind that I might be writing too often.

Keep in mind, I sponsor/correspond with 3 children – which obviously takes less time than if I were sponsoring/corresponding with 5 or more children. I know that my letters will likely arrive in larger batches (maybe 4 or 5 at a time) and I’m ok with that. In that grouping there are probably 2 ‘letters’ and 2-3 notes of encouragement that don’t really need responses. I also don’t expect the children to respond to every letter I write… BUT I want them to know that I am thinking about them; that I care about them; that I love them.

This is where you come in – How often do you write your sponsored children? Do you think there comes a point where you are writing too often? Does the age of the child make a difference? Does the gender? Basically, what are your thoughts on the matter?

This is a great question! When I really got into letter writing I wrote more than once a week. My mom also wrote very often (even more than I did), and was asked at one point to write less one time when she called into Compassion. She writes about once a week now, though. I would say that at this point I average writing every other week…but it’s easier for me because I am still ALWAYS writing letters…we just spread it out among our 14 kids!

You’ll find a rhythm that works for you. Just rest assured that your children are so blessed to have you and they cherish every letter you send!

Thanks for the encouragement! I’ve decided to write about once a week. I really don’t want to overwhelm the children or the workers, and at the same time, I don’t want to get ‘burnt-out’ and go back to writing less. Hopefully the once a week-ish limit will help with all of that. BUT I’m going to be super flexible with that, too. 🙂

And 14 kids! That’s a LOT of letters! But what an amazing ministry you have!!
